Around the beginning of 1881, the first settlers of Tobermory used lanterns hung in a tree to guide ships through the treacherous passageways to Big Tub Harbour at night. In 1885, the Big Tub Lighthouse was erected at a height of 43 feet from the ground to the lantern.
A hexagonal wooden building we see today was erected in 1885. The Big Tub Lighthouse stands at a height of 43 feet from the ground to the lantern. It was fully automated in 1952.
