This statue is one of many which commemorates the 75th anniversary of CancerCare Manitoba which has been named "Bears on Broadway" and is displayed on the grounds of the Legislative Building in the City of Winnipeg. This bear statue is called "Bear Necessities", created by Hubert Theroux and represents a man's need for shelter, food, water and clothing. With his container of juice and fish snack, the bear sits quietly under an umbrella reading his newspaper with a bottle of sunscreen nearby to show its support against cancer.
Many volunteers, artists and sponsors have put their hard work and enthusiasm into this project and at one time, 62 seven-foot bears were placed along the Broadway strip. These bears remain there for a couple of months during summer through to October, to help raise more than $400,000 for this important cancer campaign.
