Manitoba's capital city and the largest in the province, Winnipeg is situated at the confluence of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers. These rivers were important canoe routes for Aboriginal traders for decades. The first European's, namely the French, arrived in 1738 and built the first trading post. Later the British arrived under the Hudson's Bay Company banner.
Many French and British men married Aboriginal women and their off-spring who lived here, the Métis, where skilled hunters and traders.
The Red River Rebellion which took place in what is now known as Winnipeg, paved the way for Manitoba's entry into the Canadian Confederation in July 1870 as the fifth Province of Canada.
Today, Winnipeg is the capital city of Manitoba with a diverse economy in the financial sector, manufacturing, as a transportation hub, tourism, and retail. Winnipeg is also culturally diverse, with one of the largest Aboriginal populations in Canada, though the largest percentage of the population is of European descent. ...More information below photos...
