New Zealand's highest mountain, Mt Cook is situated along the jagged Southern Alps - a range of mountains pushed up along an alpine fault line forming part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This beautiful ridge of alps were developed between 25-30 million years ago. Today, much of the Southern Alps are protected by several National Parks - the most notable being: Aoraki Mt Cook National Park, Westland National Park, and Mt Aspiring National Park.
The scenery of this mountain range is outstanding with towering mountains, glaciers, beautiful lakes, rivers, and native bush. Lake Pukaki, which is fed by the Tasman River (which owes its beginnings to the Hooker and Tasman Glaciers, the latter being the longest glacier in the Southern Alps range), offers visitors stupendous views of Mt Cook and the Southern Alps from its southern shores.
