A father blackbird keeps a close eye on its baby in the nest that was constructed upon a decorative animal skull in the city of Freising in Bavaria, Germany. The baby blackbird seems to be singing for his next meal as the father waits for the mother to return with food for the youngster.
The male blackbird is black all over except for a yellow eye-ring and bill where the baby has all brown plumage and beak. In the first year of a blackbird's life there is a very high mortality and a blackbird has an average life expectancy of about two and a half years.
Springtime in Germany can be a little hectic for a blackbird as it spends weeks trying to define and defend the boundaries of their territories.
