The blue sky above the Crown Range Road is bright and clear and is bearing down on the fields. This road is found in the Central Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand, and is the highest sealed road in all of New Zealand. The term sealed road is used in Australia and New Zealand to describe a road that has a hard smooth surface and is constructed for wheeled vehicles to travel on; it is notable because it is the only road of this nature that is also the highest in elevation.
The Crown Range Road is a winding, very steep road that travels between Arrowtown and Wanaka. The Crown Range mountains lie just to east of Arrowtown and this road travels to and from that mountain range. ... continue below the picture...
If a traveller leaves Arrowtown on the Crown Range Road they start at the bottom of what is known as 'the zig zag' portion of the road, and have a steep and winding climb to the Crown Terrace. This is an area of land that is large and flat and grows crops very well. A person will keep going on this road past Eastburn Road and then the road starts to climb again up to the Crown Saddle. This area is so high that it is perfect for viewing areas and for tourists to take pictures. The Crown Range Road then follows the Cardrona Creek, which leads in to the Cardrona River. It is a very long, but pleasant journey.
