Deposits of crystalized salt on an ancient lake bed in Death Valley rise up in columns that are sharp and as hard as rock create an interesting landscape. The water which lies in the mud beneath evaporates and deposits the salt on the surface. Wind and rain are what dramatically shape the terrain. Death Valley National Park is situated in California, USA.
