The Badwater Basin salt flats appear as a blanket of white snow until you walk out onto the surface. It's a crusty top which crunches under foot with large flat areas and small ridges. These flats hide a mud and salt mixture which has dried in the summer heat and as it cracks any water in the mixture is further evaporated. The Salt Flats are found in Death Valley National Park in California, USA.
