The outstanding masterpiece seen on the inside of the dome in the Cathedral of Santa Maria dei Fiori in the city of Florence, Italy covers 3600 square meters. The Grand Duke Cosimo I de Medici commissioned Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari to paint 'The Last Judgement', which consists of five frescoes. Begun in 1568, this huge work was not completed until 1579. Vasari died in 1574, so Zuccari and other collaborating artists continued on until the masterpiece of the cupola at the cathedral was finished.
