The Piazza Del Campo is a large, open, public space in the city of Siena. It is perhaps one of the finest examples in Europe of a Medieval Square, and is visited by thousands of people every year who enjoy the many sites, shops, restaurants and the historic layout of the piazza itself.
The Palazzo Pubblico, the town hall, is actually a palace, built in 1297, meant to originally house the republican government, and is an excellent example of Italian Medieval architecture with heavy Gothic influences. The front of the palace is curved slightly to offset the curve of the Piazza del Campo.
The Torre del Mangia - the tower connected to the Palazzo Pubblico, the town hall - was built between 1325 and 1348 and at that time, was the tallest religious tower in Medieval Italy. ... continue below the picture...
... It is still the second tallest in the whole of Italy.
The Piazza del Campo used to be a marketplace, and now is the site of many festivals, gatherings, and the famous horse race held twice a year in Siena, the Palio.
