After striving for a distinctive flag of its own, the flag of Quebec with its four fleur-de-lis was adopted as the provincial flag on January 21, 1948 replacing the Carillon flag which was in use from the early 20th century.
Also dubbed the Fleur-de-lis flag, the Quebec flag of Canada hails from the royal flags of France. The white fleurs-de-lys are a symbol of purity - signifying the Virgin Mary.
The flag was originally proposed with the four fleurs-de-lys placed in the outer corners of the flag pointing in, however this concept was changed to the current style to conform to the rules of heraldry.
