There are lots of fascinating things to see in Red Rock Coulee Natural Area near Medicine Hat in Alberta, Canada but the most magnificent part of this area is the large round reddish colored boulders. These boulders are sandstone concretions and can be up to 2.5 meters in diameter.Many years ago, prehistoric seas created these boulders as many layers of sand, calcite and iron oxide began forming around a main center section which consists of shells, leaves and bones. The waters of the sea continuously formed more layers and the boulders continued to grow.When visiting Red Rock Coulee Natural Area in Alberta, Canada, have a close look at these boulders and you may be able to see the layers of growth and possibly some prehistoric shells, leaves or bones.There are many odd looking geographical features in Red Rock Coulee and it may take you longer than you think to explore this fascinating location. ... continue below the picture...
