The town of Russell on the North Island of New Zealand is situated in the Bay of Islands and has so much charm and history that it is ideal for a romantic getaway or family vacation. The pier in Russell is full of excitement, attractions and activities as there are always people coming and going from the Paihia ferries, fishing boats departing and leaving the harbor and people strolling the pier to enjoy the scenery.
This town was one of the first places where the Europeans settled and it was declared the first capital of New Zealand. There is a museum that people can visit to learn of all the history that dates back many years about the town of Russell, New Zealand.
In past years, the town of Russell has been modernized to some extreme but it has never taken away from the historic charm that is presented here. ... continue below the picture...
... There are two supermarkets, a bakery, butcher, liquor store, hardware store, bars as well as many restaurants that are in a cafe style all the way up to elegant dining establishments.
There are approximately 1,100 people that live in this town which has increased by a couple of hundred since 2001. Once you have been to the town of Russell on the North Island of New Zealand, you will understand why people that come here on vacation find it to be the jewel in the many towns in the Bay of Islands.
