Formed of sandstone and compressed clay, Castle Butte lies in the Big Muddy Valley, about 200 kilometres (about 125 miles) south of Regina, the capital city of the Province of Saskatchewan. This area is one of the most rugged and driest in the province and the Valley measures about 60 kilometres (37 miles) in length, up to 48 metres (160 feet) in depth and in some places, about 3 kilometres (about a mile and three quarters) wide.
