New Zealand is synonymous with sheep. currently the sheep population outnumbers the human population 7:1 - a fact which feeds the myriad of sheep jokes circulating the world over. Sheep numbers peaked in the 1980's at around 22:1 but have since declined.
There are many sheep breeds found throughout the country. From the Merino which was the first sheep introduced to New Zealand and best known for their prized wool to the peculiar looking Texel breed which was introduced in the 1980's.
