The Alabama Hills Recreation Area is a must see when travelling through the interior of California. It is a magical place of golden rock formations, some that are smooth and almost human in form and others that look as though rocks have just been dumped or strewn around the landscape.
Overlooking the Alabama's is the Sierra Nevada Mountain range which plays host to Mt Whitney, the highest mountain in the contiguous United States.
While the rock of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and that of the Alabama Hills Recreation Area look different, that is a result of different weathering patterns and erosion. They are in fact the same age.
