Smooth sculpted granite rock are the prominent features of the Alabama HIlls Recreation Area, which contrast against the sharp peaks of the Sierra Nevada.
In fact the rock found in the Alabama Hills is exactly the same age as the rock found in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada. The varying appearance comes from different weathering patterns. Some of the rock in the Alabama Hills appear rounded, this is granite shaped by wind, wind driven sand and rain. Other rock formations are formed from metamorphosed volcanic rock and appear sharper.
The Alabama Hills were named after the CSS Alabama, a confederate warship. Since the 1920's, they have also been the location of many films and TV shows including the Lone Ranger, Hopalong Cassidy films, Joe Kid, How the West was Won and many more.
We hope you enjoy our collection of scenic pictures from the Alabama Hills Recreation Area.
