Fresh snow covers the shores of Mono Lake, an ancient lake now protected within the boundaries of Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve.
Tufa towers have long been exposed to the elements because of natural evaporation and man made water diversion, so that the rivers that once fed Mono Lake are now channeled into the LA aquaduct to supply water to the city of LA. During winter and spring snowfall, the exposed tufa towers also become covered in snow and further weathering.
Mono Lake is accessed via State Highway 395 and is a year round destination.
