Spotted Lake in the Okanagan-Similkameen Region of British Columbia looks like something out of Alice in Wonderland as the pools (or spots) of water can be seen breaking up the surface of the lake and this is a natural lake, not a man made one. This lake can be seen along Highway 3, also known as Crowsnest Highway and is located on the way to the town called Osoyoos.
It has that spotted appearance because it contains a very high number of different minerals, causing the water to pool off and even change colour in the different seasons. This lake contains magnesium sulfate, calcium and sodium sulphates in some of the highest concentrations in the world, along with silver, titanium and about 10 other minerals in smaller quantities, but are still present in the water. ... continue below the picture...
This photo was taken when the weather was cooler, because in the summer months, most of the lake evaporates and leaves only the spots behind. Visitors used to be able to walk among these spots and see the magnesium sulfate effect on the lake as this causes the water to crystallize and can turn it a different colour. Today, visitors can only get a look from far away as a fence has been erected.
