The original wooden church was built on this site in St Boniface, Winnipeg in 1818. It was replaced by a cathedral in 1832 which was subsequently destroyed by fire in 1860.
A new stone cathedral was then built in 1862 however, a growing population saw the need for yet another cathedral - the facade of which is still seen today. Though partially destroyed by fire in 1968, in 1972 the original facade and some of the remaining walls were integrated into the new building.
