Photo: Statue Airman Legislative Building Winnipeg Manitoba Canada

A statue commemorating the Airmen who lost their lives during World War II, in front of the Legislative Assembly in the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The building, finished in 1920 stands as a proud symbol for all Manitobans.

The Legislative Building in Winnipeg is located in downtown and serves as the seat for the National Assembly. It is built of local Tyndall Stone and Italian marble, and the top of the dome, where the Golden Boy stands, is 72 metres high. This is the third building that has served as the Legislative Building and was constructed 50 years after Manitoba joined the Canadian confederation. The dome is common to many government buildings in Canada, but there are numerous statues and dedications in the grounds to various people and events that have helped shaped Canada.

This statue of an Airman is a monument to commemorate the thousands of Airmen that lost their lives for Canada during World War II. Canada's Air Force was the fourth largest division in the Allied Forces and at one point had over 200,000 members fighting for Canada. ... continue below the picture...

... On June 6, 1944, some of Canada's fighter planes were sent over the beaches of Normandy to take place in the D-Day Invasion. Many were told to stand guard while the Allied Forces made their way up the beaches. They then provided air support to the British and Canadian Forces on the ground.

Thousands of airmen lost their lives during this World War and this is one of many monuments across Canada to their bravery during this difficult time.
