Along Stephen Avenue Mall, the Steel Trees sculpture looms large against a night sky in the City of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Stephen Avenue Mall or Walk as it is sometimes known, is actually a portion of 8th Avenue SW in downtown Calgary and is closed to vehicles except between the hours of 6 pm and 6 am at night. Stephen Avenue is home to high end retail boutiques, pubs, cafes and some of Calgary's finest restaurants. Named after George Stephen - the first President of the Canadian Pacific Railway, Stephen Avenue was declared to be a Canadian historic site in 1992. The Steel "Trees" sculpture was designed to reduce the effect of the strong winds that blow in Calgary between the buildings, especially in the winter.
