A totem pole carved by a family member of the Northwest Coast Kwakiutl is displayed on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislative Building in the city of Winnipeg. Carved out of western red cedar, in a three-dimensional form, each totem tells a story using images of bears, birds, humans, animals from the oceans or numerous species of the forest.
A majority of the Kwakiutl totem poles are painted in six basic colors such as black, red, green, yellow, brown and gray. The grounds of the Legislative Building covers an 30 acre area where the gardens and lawns display totem poles, statues of very important people, sculptures and some of the finest pieces of artwork found throughout the province.Kwakiutl Totem Pole on the Legislative Building Grounds in the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
