Enea Silvio Piccolomini was born in the village of Corsignano, Italy in 1405, and in 1458 was promoted from cardinal to Pope Pius II. His dream was to rebuild the village into a perfect Renaissance town - to be called Pienza, or Pio's Town (after the Pope himself). The architect of the project was Bernardo Rossellino, and the Piazza Pio II is the centre of this ideal place.
The Square contains most of the important buildings of the town, including the Palazzo Piccolomini, the Cathedral, the Palazzo Pubblico and the lovely 15th century well.
Palazzo Pubblico (Town Hall) in Piazza Pio II, in the historic old town centre of Pienza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Province of Siena, Region of Tuscany, Italy, Europe.
