The city of Siena in Tuscany, Italy was built, over time, on three hills and the first settlers were the Etruscans, although at the time the Saina tribe was inhabitants of the area. The Estruscans were resourceful people, who 'modernized' this part of Italy with irrigation which made the land fertile and useful. The Estrucans usually made sure their settlements were also forts. The time frame of this transformation was from 900BC to 400BC.
The first Roman documentation is dated 70AD, when the town was called Saena Julia. However, the legend of the city's beginning is even more romantic - Senius, the son of Remus (of the Romulus and Remus fame), is said to have founded Siena. There are many statues of the wolf and the twins in the city, and other art pieces can be found here and there. ... continue below the picture...

The city consists of many alleyways and steps which joins the three hills together. At the heart of this lovely old Tuscan city of Siena, one will find the Piazza del Campo, the Town Square - where stands the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia. Another of the landmarks of Siena is the cathedral, the Duomo, a beautiful Gothic and Italian Romanesque building begun in the 12th century and not completed until near the end of the 14th century. This picturesque city of Siena is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, olive groves and vineyards. Definitely, a must on the traveller's itinerary.
