Vivid blue ice clings to the escarpment during winter where the Upper Falls of Johnston Canyon flowed freely during summer. This is a prime destination for ice climbing in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.
Outfitters from the town of Banff provide guides as well as the ice climbing gear required; from the ice picks through to crampons, helmets and harnesses. Alternatively, visitors can bring their own climbing gear and take to the frozen wall of ice at their own leisure.
