A surreal, almost spooky wilderness area set in the heart of New Mexico, Bisti / De-Na-Zin Wilderness covers an area of 41,170 acres of badlands.
Weathered sandstone formations make up the majority of what the visitor to this area of unusual scenery will see. Hoodoos of all shapes and sizes, cap rocks, petrified logs, narrow ridges and arches of sandstone and more can be seen, all set in the desolate landscape known as Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness.
Although, at first, Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness looks like a wasteland of sand and rock, with time the beauty of the scenery and the diversity of it becomes apparent. Swirls etched into sandstone constantly erased and reworked by nature, smoothed knobs lie on the desert floor in the shape of eggs, hoodoos of every shape and variety tower high above. Then there is the play with light, golden and bright, morning through to night.
