The iconic symbol of the very far north of New Zealand - Cape Reinga and the famous lighthouse draw visitors from near and far.
The original lighthouse for the far north was actually situated on nearby Motuopao Island. The wooden constructed lighthouse was established on the northern end of the island in the 1880's with the settlement of three families of lightkeepers.
In 1941 the location of the lighthouse was changed due to the treacherous location of the original lighthouse on Motuopao Island and the loss of at least 2 lives by drowning.
The original light and lantern (glass house which housed the light) were relocated to a new concrete base at it's current location at Cape Reinga.
The Cape Reinga Lighthouse was fully automated in 1987 and the light keepers withdrawn from the site.
